About the Martinez Dog Park Group

Welcome!!

This is the Martinez Dog Park Group Page

Martinez has thousands of dogs (and dog people!) that need a safe, open, public place to play, socialize, and exercise. We are a group of citizens who have been working with Martinez City Council to build a fantastic dog park. There have been several meetings, committees, and workshops, and the PRMCC has referred our proposal back to City Council where we worked with the city to develop a suitable plan to build a dog park. After hours upon hours of brainstorming and a lot of volunteer work and teamwork with the city engineer & parks dept. a downtown dog park was developed and ready to propose so we were put on the city agenda and voted on in a council meeting.

The vote was UNANIMOUS to support a Dog Park at the Muir Amphitheater at the waterfront!!!

Follow us on Facebook for the latest announcements, meetings, and updates for our cause.

More about the Martinez Dog Park Group

The Martinez Dog Park Group is an ad hoc group of citizens that are working together to help Martinez establish a place for humans and canines to socialize and play freely. We actively support the project, and represent the thousands of dogs and their families in Martinez who would benefit from a designated place to run and socialize. A fenced, secure, maintained dog recreation area will provide a safe place for dog owners to play with their dogs off-leash. City parks are often busy and surrounded by busy streets, which make them not ideal for dog play. Open spaces like Briones are too wild and boundless for many dogs to roam safely. The solution is for a fenced location within Martinez that specifically accommodates dogs and their owners.

Martinez Dog Park Group Mission:
“To establish a fenced-in, off-leash dog park where well-behaved canine citizens can exercise in a clean, safe environment without endangering or annoying people, property or wildlife. To develop a beautiful, well maintained space open to all dog lovers and friends who are willing to uphold the park’s rules and restrictions. To view this park as a community project, in partnership with the City of Martinez, designed to satisfy the needs of dog-owners and non–dog owners alike.”

The PROs of a Downtown Dog Park:
– Bring hundreds of people a week to downtown Martinez
– Increase downtown and city-wide commerce
– Reduce crime and loitering;
– Improve property values in the community
– Allows dogs to exercise and socialize safely.
– Promotes responsible dog ownership
– Provides an outlet for dog owners to socialize
– Promotes health and safety by giving dogs a designated play spot

The upsides for a downtown or Marina dog park benefit more than just the thousands of dog owners in Martinez. A dog park will draw people and their spending money downtown. It will discourage crime and vagrancy in the area. It will increase property values in the community. And most importantly, it will give dogs a safe place to run free in a setting made for them. Consider the park an investment in the community that will pay off in health and happiness for all.

Martinez-Dog-Park-Final Please print and PASS OUT TO EVERYONE YOU SEE!!! *shout out to the Martinez Pet Food Express for creating this flyer!!

The city would like to introduce the new sign-in sheet at the dog park. This will help them to get better information regarding the use of the Dog Park. Please sign in at each visit, let’s let the city know we are here! Remember, the city labeled this dog park TEMPORARY for 3 years. The city would like to confirm the dog park is a benefit to Mtz. Sign-in sheet is left of the entrance near the small dog park next to the signage, the mailbox is where the sign-in binder is housed.

Please include:

· Name (optional)
· Date/Time
· Number of dogs
· Martinez Resident? Y/N
o If yes, neighborhood/area
o If no, city of residence

**also, just a reminder to please call Mtz public works Dept. for ANY maintenance issues at (925) 372-3580

***Update from city to answer question, what is this information being gathered for??:

The Parks and Recreation Commission requested information on the Park’s use multiple times, but we were not in a position to provide any accurate level of data regarding when people were using it, or how many people were using it, etc., other than anecdotally what we saw when we ourselves were down there or had heard from others.

I think the basis for the questions from the PRMCC was just as to whether or not the Park was being used by the public, particularly given the time and effort that had gone into its conception/construction and the level of public interest that had been shown leading up to its development.

Upcoming Closure Sat, March 24th Until 1pm:

Attention Martinez Temporary Dog Park Enthusiasts – Closure of the Dog Park will take place the morning of Saturday, March 24th until 1pm due to the City’s Annual Mini Motorland. The Martinez Waterfront Amphitheater will be transformed into a child size interactive village, navigated by rideable toys, trikes and bikes from 10:00 am-12:00 pm. Over 100 children and their families are expected to attend the fun-filled morning. The Dog Park will not be used for any event activities and will remain closed. Clean up is expected to be completed by 1:00 pm – at which time the Dog Park will reopen.

If you have any pre-school aged children, we encourage you to attend. You can sign up online here! Please leave your dog at home until the event is over.

Thank you for your continued flexibility and understanding in sharing the Martinez Waterfront Amphitheater and Temporary Dog Park with our upcoming event.

The Martinez City Council adopted Resolution No. 039-17 on April 5, 2017, which designated the John Muir Amphitheater (also known as the Martinez Waterfront Amphitheater) as a Temporary Dog Park Site for a period of up to three years from the first date of public use, and allocated $50,000 to help fund necessary improvements.

Since receiving City Council approval to proceed, City staff transformed portions of the Amphitheater into a Temporary Dog Park, which opened to the public on July 14, 2017. This exciting space near the marina has become a communal spot for dog owners in the area and is enjoyed by many dog-loving enthusiasts.

Recently installed a sign-in guest:

The City recently installed a sign-in guest book near the entrance to the small dog area in order to better track ongoing park usage, at the suggestion of the Parks, Recreation, Marina and Cultural Commission (PRMCC).  The City commonly tracks and reports on activities and usage at other park locations and often has the benefit of data provided through various program or picnic reservations.  For the Temporary Dog Park at the Martinez Waterfront Amphitheater, the City did not have an effective means to track usage until installing this sign-in book.  The City appreciates patrons taking the time to sign in to let us know how popular this new amenity is so that can be passed along to the PRMCC and City Council.

The City would also would like to clarify the dog park – which only just opened on July 14, 2017, and was designated as a temporary dog park site for a period of up to three years – is not being closed, as the City continues to explore potential locations for a permanent dog park facility.
